Route 99 !

Oh wowza. How do I begin? Well, I definitely wish I knew about this place way sooner. To be quite honest, everyone in Edmonton really should know about it. My dad was sharing some Edmonton diner history with me, like how there used to be plenty on Jasper Ave. It's unfortunate that a lot of these places are all gone now and being replaced with many franchise and common chained restaurants. Now, this was my first time eating at Route 99, so I haven't experienced plenty of their menu, but eventually I will. I have high hopes that I'll feel the same way about this diner.

Donair Burger with tomatoes, onions, lettuce and tzatziki sauce

Alrighty, so this is the lovely Donair Burger. Not going to lie, I'm quite excited to share my thoughts about this burger because it brings back one of my favorite memories. Now, this is kind of a random, long-shot question, but ever try a donair from Mr.D's Greek Deli at the Pike Market in Seattle? (http://mrdsgreekdelicacies.netfirms.com/) Those of you who have, you know what I'm probably thinking, best donairs ever! Those of you who haven't well I'll just tell you a little something something about them. First, my mouth is watering right now just thinking about them. Second, their donairs are so refreshing. Now, I'm not hating and saying the local donair places aren't good here. They are, but personally I feel like it's all the same; heavy, spicy, greasy donair meat with standard pita bread, tomato, lettuce, onions, cheese and sweet sauce/tzatziki sauce. Mr.D's donairs...woahh. Their ingredients are the same, but oh so different. Major factor, the meat that they use. They have the regular beef and chicken, but also have lamb. Fresh vegetable ingredients and their tzatziki sauce....oh my Lord. Let's just say this, describing it is one thing, but experiencing it is another. Back to the point, the burger. This reminded me of all of that delicious experience that I had and each and every part, up to the tzatziki sauce, was amazing. Tzatziki sauce is very important to me because I'm not a big fan. The only places that I'll ever have it is at Mr.D's and now Route 99. I've tried grocery ones, ones from one of the Banff restaurants...don't like it.

This may not seem like a big deal, but I definitely noticed that even their Caesar salad tasted better than places like The Keg. I could be wrong about this, but from what I tasted it seemed like they mixed in lemon juice instead of dropping a slice for customers to squeeze it on themselves. Also, my dad suggested it could be because they make their own Caesar salad dressing. I'll keep it in mind and ask the next time, but I thought that was a nice small detail that needs recognition.

K so...I'm having difficulty uploading the other pictures so I'll have to post them when it works. This is all for now, but come back to check out the other dishes!

Maruju Sushi

A couple days ago I took a day trip to Calgary with my parents. We go to cow-town quite a bit, but EVERY SINGLE time we go we ALWAYS go to this sushi restaurant. I'm not exaggerating, I swear. We were introduced to this place by my cousin, Steven Mah, and at first I didn't like Maruju Sushi because the portions were too small. I don't know why, but at the same time I still liked their food even though it wasn't miraculously good. Over the years, we kept going and now I absolutely love this place. Everytime we go, they're always changing and improving. Their portions are a lot bigger now; the picture with the salmon sashimi - my dad and I were thrilled with it. Their menu changes time to time; they have way more variety and choices - before they only had a page or two where each selection were very spaced out. Now they have four and are properly spaced out. They always add unusual but absolutely delicious dishes; in fact they were the first sushi place I knew off that had mango sushi - which by the way is sooooo effin delicious.
Some of the things that Maruju Sushi needs to work on is their service and the time they take to serve the food. Now it's not completely bad, but it should be worked on. They only have one waitress, which is fine, but when it gets busy...I feel bad for her. Even when it's dead though, she doesn't really interact with the guests unless it's to serve you your food and asks you only once if everything is okay. There are people who enjoy servers that leave them alone and only come when being called, but personally I don't because I would feel like a needy annoying person always asking them to come. When it comes to the time for food preparations, I'm just worried that if they do improve on the time it takes for them to make the food, the quality of it won't be as good. Personally, quality>time. It takes them maybe half an hour or 40 minutes to serve the food, which is a little long, but bearable. Basically, if you're in a rush don't go.

All-in-all, I totally encourage you guys to go to Maruju Sushi if you're ever in Calgary whether it be for this week because of the Stampede or any other reasons.

F'Really Awesome Milkshakes & Smoothies

So for all of those who live in Edmonton, as you know we've been getting some crazy hot weather. To cool ourselves down we always get stuff like ice cream or sweet fruity drinks. I don't know about you guys, but everytime I get one of those I end up getting thirstier. Don't get me wrong, those sugary Frozen Lemonades from Tim Hortons, milkshakes and fruit smoothies from McDonalds are sooo good, but I crave water right afterwards. Well, thanks to my lovely new co-worker Megan who introduced me to F'Real Milkshakes, I finally discovered a summer beverage that will quench my thirst without the help of water.

F'Real Milkshakes can be found at the Co-op gas station on St.Albert Trail and 132 Ave. I've been told that other gas stations like the Macs near the University of Alberta also has these too. I'm not sure which other ones do, but if you bump into one of these machines I highly suggest you get one of these. I can't say F'Real Milkshakes has a low amount of sugar..cause I have no idea how much is considered low, but I can guarantee it's not overly sweet tasting. And a bonus, you can choose the thickness of your milkshake/smoothie!

Flavors:
  • Strawberry
  • Cookies & Cream
  • Mint Chocolate Chip
  • Chocolate
  • Strawberry Banana
  • Mango
  • More...(I can't remember them all)
If you do take my advice and get one, enjoy and please share your thoughts on the product. I know y'all can be more descriptive than I am.

(By the way, there are cute looking guys that work there. At least when I went today...LOL!)

First Blog!

Hello! So this is my first blog and it's going to be all about food. Why? Well first off I love food. Who doesn't? Kinda need it in order to live. Hehe. Second, I think it's amazing how creative people can be, especially with food. Personally, I would hate being a chef because seeing my masterpiece disappear would kinda suck...but on the other hand it would be very satisfying to see it disappear because someone enjoyed it. I was going to first start off the blog with the first dish I had after I was done finals, but I didn't take any pictures...so that doesn't work. Also I'm very lazy right now and I just wanted to get the blog up and running.

I'm sure the only people who are reading my blog right now are probably my friends...hahaha! so a shout out to you guys! thanks for following/reading! la-la-laave you guys! <3

I shall upload pictures soon! Peace!
